The Case for Drinking MORE Water - Even if You’re NOT Thirsty

 Water -- No matter how you like it -- Plain, Flat, Bubbly, Cold, Room Temperature, Hot, With Fruit, With Vegetables and from a kitchen faucet or bottled -- YOUR goal is TO DRINK MORE OF IT throughout the day, but especially during times of increased physical activity.

 

It’s my guess that you’re going start to feel better once you start moving more. With that increased physical activity, you may find yourself a bit more hungry or perhaps feeling you earned the right to eat more. While I am not the food cop and you should eat when you’re truly physically hungry (vs. just bored or find yourself in a “fill in the blank” kind of mood), in most situations, it’s better to drink water -- before, during and immediately following physical activity.

 

Drinking water is essential for feeling good throughout the day and ensuring you’re exercising efficiently.

 

How Much H2O?

 

Strive for 8 to 10 oz of water about 20 minutes before you start exercising, and then continue drinking about 8 to 10 oz of water for every 10 to 20 minutes that you’re continuously physically active.

 

Over the course of an hour, you may consume 60 to 100 ounces of water. While that seems like a lot, please recognize that your body is losing water by just breathing and sweating. You need to not only replace what’s lost but ensure that you’re staying well-hydrated!  Drinking water, especially during times of increased physical activity, will enable your heart to pump blood more efficiently, transporting oxygen and essential nutrients to all of those hard-working muscles.

 

So how do you take your water?

 

I love water - both plain and bubbly. I do like a little flavor from lemons, which I know is also good for digestion. I also drink a cup of hot tea in the evening after dinner, even on warm nights as I find the act very soothing and calming.

 

It's my goal to drink my body weight in water everyday!  I add to this amount on days that I'm exercising and doing a lot of physical activing.  

 

If you're not drinking enough, try starting your day with a tall glass of it -- even before morning coffee or tea. As I've mentioned before, I genuinely believe that you can achieve success when you consider making small changes every day --- focusing on at least 1 and no more than 3 ways you can help yourself be stronger and healthier, every day!
